Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) or the Malaysian Institute of Architects is set up to promote and enlarge knowledge, study and practice of architecture, to provide a central organization for architecture and to provide for the definition and qualification of the profession of architecture.

• PAM is the learned society for architects and is the professional institute for architects in Malaysia
• Unlike Lembaga Akitek Malaysia, PAM is not a statutory body but a voluntary one
• It has its Constitution which is approved by the Registrar of Societies
• History: The Institute, originally known as the Institute of Architects Malaya was founded in 1920. In 1948 the name and consequently the Constitution was changed to the Federation of Malaya Society of Architects (FMSA) which was allied to the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). PAM under the present Constitution was registered with the Registrar of Societies, Malaysia on 20th January 1967.

The primary objective of founding the institutes was “for the advancement and elevation of architecture and the various arts and sciences connected therewith”. The constitution list objectives including the following:

• To promote and enlarge the knowledge, study and practice of architecture and the various arts and science connected therewith.
• To provide a central organization for architects in the form of a learned and scientific society for arts and crafts and to provide for the definition and qualification of the profession of architecture.
• To assist and advise Government, local authorities, or other private or public bodies on issues relating to the art and science of building, the development of property and on town planning and the design and construction of public works generally.
• To promote friendly discourse amongst architects and to hold meetings for readings and discussions of matters relating to the art and science of architecture.
